Soil moisture sensor with GPS and cellular – measuring soil moisture at multiple depths
Know how much water is in the root zone, from 15 to 60 cm deep, without a gateway and without calibration. The sensor sends its measurements over the cellular network by itself and can always be found thanks to GPS.
Price indication: €850 to €1,400 per sensor.

Measuring soil moisture across the whole root zone
The sensor measures the moisture content, electrical conductivity (EC) and temperature of the soil. The short model measures at 15 and 30 cm, the long model at 15, 30, 45 and 60 cm. A new measurement is added every 36 minutes. So you not only see whether it is dry, but also whether rain or irrigation reaches the deeper roots and connects with the deeper soil moisture.

Built to stay in the field
Multiple depths in one probe
One borehole gives a complete moisture profile. You steer irrigation on what actually reaches the roots.
GPS on board
The sensor sticks out barely 9 cm above the ground. GPS shows it on the map, even among a hundred street trees or in a large orchard.
Cellular instead of a private network
A built-in SIM card picks the best network by itself (4G, LTE-M, NB-IoT). No gateway, no cables, no data logger.
Why this soil moisture sensor needs no calibration per soil type
The sensor uses FDR (Frequency Domain Reflectometry). It measures how strongly the soil holds an electric field. Water does that about twenty times more strongly than soil particles, so the signal mainly reveals how much water is present. By measuring at two frequencies and determining EC separately, the sensor corrects for salt and fertilizer by itself. If you have a soil analysis, you can refine the values further in the app.

Who measures soil moisture?
- Fruit grower – steering drip irrigation on the moisture profile under the tree row. More for fruit growers
- Farmer – deciding when irrigation pays off, per field. Irrigation control based on soil moisture
- Arborist – demonstrating aftercare of new plantings and planning watering. More for arborists
- Cities and municipalities – monitoring young street trees and watering where it is needed. Watering trees at the right moment
- Green roof manager – matching irrigation to the substrate (see the limits below). More for green roof managers
Honest advice: when should you choose this sensor?
PlantData.Live is brand-independent. We recommend the sensor that fits your situation.
We recommend this sensor if you:
- want to monitor multiple depths (trees, fruit growing, deep-rooting crops);
- have scattered locations without an on-site network;
- are looking for a sensor you can easily install yourself, without maintenance.
Choose another solution if:
- your substrate is less than 15 cm thick, as on many extensive green roofs;
- you measure in pots or loose growing substrates;
- you want to know whether the plant itself is under stress? Then we recommend adding a dendrometer.

What does a soil moisture sensor cost?
Expect €850 to €1,400 per sensor. Where you land in that range depends on:
- the model: 2 or 4 measuring depths;
- the number of measuring points and how they are spread over your fields or city;
- installation by yourself or by us;
- the connection to the portal, alerts and tailored advice.
That way you quickly see whether a measurement fits the budget of your crop, orchard or planting project.
